If your physician permits a generic substitution and you elect to purchase a non-preferred brand name drug, you will pay 10% of the generic drug cost plus the difference between the generic drug cost and the non-preferred brand name cost. However, if your physician indicates “dispense as written” on the prescription then the penalty does not apply and you pay 50% of the cost of the non-preferred brand name drug.
